Along with our regular 6 shows a week, this month the Alchemy Comedy Theater is hosting more holiday sketch comedy shows than you can fit under a tree! Once each weekend in December (3rd, 10th, 17th, and 23rd at 9pm) Alchemy’s all-star sketch comedy brings you “It’s a Wonderful Laugh”, our very own scripted holiday special.
We also have two special, one-time-only guest shows from Charleston, SC. The first (Thursday, Dec 8th) is from writer and comedian, Hunter Gardner. Inspired by a true (drinking) story, “Drinking With Jesus” is a comedy that asks the audience, “How do we find a balance between our virtues and our vices?” Written and performed by recovering churchaholic Hunter Gardner, the one-hour show is composed of character monologues and painfully true moments that remind us about how alcohol can make you do crazy things—and that religion can make you do some even crazier things. A story for Bible readers and beer chuggers alike, “Drinking With Jesus” offers audiences an hour of holy hilarious fun with big characters and big laughs. Read more about in this wonderful write up from the Greenville Journal.
The second special guest (Friday, Dec 9th) from Charleston, SC is from performer and Theatre 99 faculty member, Andy Livengood. His One Man Version of Every Christmas Special You Have Ever Seen (almost) has been running for 8 years in Charleston and was Voted “Best Play of 2011” by the readers of the Charleston City Paper. Andy is at his parent’s house for their annual Christmas Eve party. It’s one of those fun types of holiday parties with no music, no booze and dad reading chapters from the Bible. There is only one way not to run screaming from the house – immerse yourself in Christmas TV specials. Andy has watched every Christmas themed TV show and movie so many times he knows most of them by heart and he’ll break them down for you. Oh yeah, this is a one man version of Charlie Brown, The Grinch, and Ebenezer Scrooge like you’ve never seen them before. Drop the kids off at grandma’s because nothing’s sacred in this high-energy romp through all of the holiday classics.

This November 3-14th, 2016 will mark the 3rd annual New South Comedy Festival and over 200 improv, stand-up, sketch, and musical comedy guests from across the country will converge on Greenville, SC. This year the festival expands to 2 weeks in order to accommodate more varied types of comedy guests. Shows will feature performers from NYC, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Knoxville, Baton Rouge, Philadelphia, Ann Arbor, Savannah, Durham, Wilmington, Raleigh, Charlotte, Charleston, and here in the Upstate and surrounding areas. All shows will be at the Alchemy Comedy Theater so seating is limited. It is suggested you pre-purchase tickets online.
The Alchemy Comedy Theater will be holding its third annual Comedy Marathon June 10-11, featuring the best of Greenville Comedy for 30 hours of non-stop entertainment (more than twice as long as last year’s event). The marathon will kick off with a live podcast celebrating the Greenville Comedy Scene at 6pm, and continue through Saturday night with vast sampling of improv, stand-up, storytelling, and sketch comedy (full schedule below). Individual tickets are $10 per show or you can purchase a $30 all-show pass.
All Alchemy events including the Marathon are held in Greenville’s iconic Coffee Underground Theater.
It’s heating up! Every March the Alchemy Comedy Theater becomes a full on comedy battle royale! This year 30 duos of Alchemy players (and a few out of town guests) are pairing up to compete for laughs and your vote to be named this year’s March Madness Dual Duel improv champions. You may have seen some games like this on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, but here the points matter. Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30pm three teams of two go head to head (to head) where improvisers will be eliminated, dreams will be made, and one team will move on to the final rounds.
This Thursday at 7:30pm will be the kickoff show for our annual improv tournament hosted by last year’s winners, Grandiose! Then at 9pm, Slimprov, our first ever Duel Dual champions (way back in 2012) will blow some minds and melt some hearts.
We also have our new season of classes starting up soon. Whether you are interested in performing and joining our company, or simply working on communication and collaboration in the real world, these comedy classes are for you. Our next Improv 101 class requires no previous comedy or theater experience and starts on April 10th at 6:30pm.
Our annual Kids & Youth Summer Camps as well as our Adult Summer Intensives are also online now. The Alchemy Comedy Theater is committed to teaching the art of improv comedy throughout the Greenville area so let us know how we can bring it to you!
