March Madness Improv & Spring Comedy Classes

Posted on

It’s heating up! Every March the Alchemy Comedy Theater becomes a full on comedy battle royale! This year 30 duos of Alchemy players (and a few out of town guests) are pairing up to compete for laughs and your vote to be named this year’s March Madness Dual Duel improv champions. You may have seen some games like this on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, but here the points matter. Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30pm three teams of two go head to head (to head) where improvisers will be eliminated, dreams will be made, and one team will move on to the final rounds.

This Thursday at 7:30pm will be the kickoff show for our annual improv tournament hosted by last year’s winners, Grandiose! Then at 9pm, Slimprov, our first ever Duel Dual champions (way back in 2012) will blow some minds and melt some hearts.

We also have our new season of classes starting up soon. Whether you are interested in performing and joining our company, or simply working on communication and collaboration in the real world, these comedy classes are for you. Our next Improv 101 class requires no previous comedy or theater experience and starts on April 10th at 6:30pm.

Our annual Kids & Youth Summer Camps as well as our Adult Summer Intensives are also online now. The Alchemy Comedy Theater is committed to teaching the art of improv comedy throughout the Greenville area so let us know how we can bring it to you!

The Alchemy Comedy Theater has hilarious live comedy shows every Friday and Saturday at 7:30 and 9pm. This holiday season we have several upcoming shows to fit the season:

  • Friday, December 18th at 9pm: Local Legends: Improv inspired by Carols from Brian Boughner
  • Saturday, December 19th at 9pm: Truth Be Told: Storytelling show on the theme JOY
  • Saturday, December 26th at 9pm: Femmeprov: Comedy Improv from Ladies for Everyone

Ring in the new year downtown with the Alchemy Comedy Theater. This show features stand-up comics Jason Farr (named SC’s Funniest comic 2014), Jake Sharon (recent transplant from Austin, TX), and headliner Boris Khaykin (from NYC). Second half features them and the cast of Local Legends for an all-star improv set! Before and after local DJ, Bradezone, will help us party.

At 9:30pm the cash bar in gallery adjoining the theater will open with light horderves. Then at 10pm the show starts with an all-star and completely improvised show. Then we’ll provide champagne for the countdown to 2016!

Give the gift of the art of an improv comedy class to someone in the Greenville area. Whether they are interested in performing and joining our company, or simply working on communication and collaboration in the real world, these comedy classes are for everyone. To see when our next class is offered visit our education page. This certificate can be used for any of the 101 classes offered in 2015. Each class runs once a week, for six weeks from 6:30-9:00pm. click here to register now!If you’re currently doing improv and want another opportunity outside of classes to learn and practice improv skills, or if you have never taken a class with Alchemy and would like to try it out, we’re excited to offer our monthly Improv 001 workshops.

Improv 001 is the opportunity to learn from the experience of Alchemy’s top instructors alongside other students and performing members of Alchemy Comedy. They are on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. Go here to register for the next class.

Admission to the workshop is $25. If this is your first Improv 001 workshop, that $25 can be later counted as a discount toward the full cost of one of our 6-week Improv 101 classes. The price is only $10 if you have taken classes with Alchemy before, but are not a member of the theater. Here’s some information about the training center and the class instructor:

The school manager Harrison Brookie is a trained educator who has spent several years teaching public high school. He was also a resident instructor under Zach Ward at the DSI Comedy Theater in NC, which has heavily inspired our style and curriculum. Ever since then Harrison has served as the Artistic Director of the Alchemy Comedy Theater. The monthly Improv 001 workshops are taught by Assistant Artistic Director Ben Burris. Having been in a directing position in Clemson’s improv comedy group and the Alchemy Comedy Theater, Ben is a skilled instructor with an eye for scenes and a knack for fun!

Topics range from ways to collaborate and agree to how to think like a character. If you’re brand new to improv comedy or have been performing in a rut, come on by. The workshop is from 6:30-9:00pm. There is no comedy or theater experience necessary, it is encouraged for people to show up early and hang out after.

This class is designed to be challenging to experienced improvisers while still approachable to beginners. You can register for the class online. If you have any questions call (864) 256-1467 or fill out this form and we’ll contact you!
